End Caps

End Caps

Any mechanical or fluidic system is only as strong as its weakest link. With many machines, a failure of a small component can have a knock-on effect which then leads to catastrophic failure for the whole mechanism. This can potentially be destructive and very costly. In filtration systems, it would typically only be a massive pressure fluctuation which could cause such a spectacular incident, something which should certainly never occur in a well-engineered system. However, failures in filtration systems can be even more problematic when they are not readily apparent – without careful monitoring and testing, faulty filters can lead to contamination of products, and wastage of materials. It is therefore as important as ever to keep a close eye on those potential ‘weak links’, the elements of the system which can cause problems. Those critical elements include filter end caps.
Anything which can cause a filter to bypass under normal use is a threat to operations, as if a filter can be bypassed it may as well not be there. The nature of filters is such that the obstruction caused to a flow of gas or liquid will inevitably cause a slight pressure variation, and this increase in pressure will open up any weakness and allow unfiltered material to leak through. Filter end caps are the only seal between the filter itself and the filter housing, so a poor seal will inevitably lead to leakage of contaminants. In order to maintain function seals in any system, it is important to use the right filters and end caps for your application. An explanation of the different types of filter end caps and their uses can be found here.
Sadly, the area of filter end caps is one in which many manufacturers and suppliers have sought to control the market by providing products which forces the customer to come back to them time and time again. The do this by supplying systems which can only use their proprietary end caps, when it would be just as easy to use standard types and give the customer, that is you, the choice. This is bad for competition as it allows these firms to control prices, and also hampers development in terms of improving the items available.
A few years ago when electric cars first became available, confusion reigned because there were several different types of charger sockets fitted to roadside chargers, and you could only recharge the batteries in your car if you had the right connection lead. This made it difficult for drivers of electric cars to find devices when they needed them, and put off new buyers from purchasing electric cars as the model of vehicle they preferred was not compatible with the infrastructure in their area.
Similarly with filter end caps, it is more convenient and cost effective for everyone when manufacturers stick to standards fittings. At CFS Filtration we can swap or modify filters and end caps to match the housings with which they are to be used. Contact us to learn more.
